Safety Tips for Burning Candles and Wax Melts
Before enjoying our luxury candles and wax melts, please take a moment to review these important safety guidelines.
All our candles and wax melts come with a safety label printed on the base of the box, providing instructions for their correct and sensible use.
In addition to these standard guidelines, we’ve outlined some key advice below to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
How to Burn a Candle Safely
Before Lighting
Trim the Wick: Always trim the wick to ¼ inch before burning. Use a wick trimmer, nail clippers, or scissors. Long or crooked wicks can cause uneven burning, dripping, or flaring.
Clear the Wax Pool: Keep the wax pool free from wick trimmings, matches, and debris.
Use a Suitable Candleholder: Ensure it is heat-resistant, sturdy, and large enough to contain drips or melted wax.
Ventilation: Burn candles in a well-ventilated room. Avoid drafts, vents, or air currents to prevent rapid or uneven burning, sooting, and excessive dripping.
Follow Burn Time Guidelines: Refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Generally, avoid burning candles for longer than four hours at a time and allow them to cool for at least two hours before relighting.
Lighting the Candle: Use long matches or a long-reach lighter. Keep hair and loose clothing away from the flame.
While Burning
Never Leave Unattended: Always stay in the room while a candle is burning.
Avoid Flammable Materials: Keep candles away from furniture, curtains, bedding, carpets, books, paper, and other flammable items.
Keep Out of Reach: Ensure candles are out of reach of children and pets and are not placed where they could be knocked over.
Do Not Touch or Move: Never handle a candle while it’s burning or if the wax is liquefied.
Discontinue Before the End: Stop burning a candle when ½ inch of wax remains, or 2 inches for pillar candles, to prevent overheating.
Space Candles Apart: Place candles at least three inches apart to prevent them from melting each other or creating drafts that cause improper burning.
Extinguish if Necessary: If the flame becomes too high or flickers repeatedly, extinguish the candle, let it cool, trim the wick, and check for drafts before relighting.
Avoid Using as a Night Light: Never burn candles while you may fall asleep.
Power Outages: Use torches or battery-powered lights during power cuts. Never use candles to search cupboards or fuel equipment, such as lanterns or kerosene heaters.
When Extinguishing a Candle
Use a Snuffer: A candle snuffer is the safest way to extinguish a candle without splattering hot wax.
Avoid Water: Never use water to extinguish a candle; it may cause hot wax to splatter and can break glass containers.
Ensure Complete Extinguishing: Confirm the wick ember is no longer glowing before leaving the room.
Let it Cool: Wait until the wax has completely cooled before touching or moving the candle.
Avoid Sharp Objects: Do not use knives or sharp tools to remove wax drippings from a glass holder, as this may scratch, weaken, or break the glass.
